History Lesson: Session on a x-President

Who remembers reading about x-President Calvin Coolidge?  Probably only in passing, if at all.  He was one of our Presidents back in the 1920’s, who basically received a bad rap from most of the historians of the day, including Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a columnist, H.L. Mencken and a folksy comedian, Will Rogers.  Great names to look up and read about, but not the purpose of this Session.  Some of the quotes associated with our x-President are what I wanted to have you read here to possibly help you reflect on how people in the present might be thinking and acting somewhat differently than how people did, less than a hundred years ago.  Do you think values have changed? The following are quotes from x-President Coolidge:

On taxes, "Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery."
On those promoting class envy, warfare and redistribution of other people’s wealth, "Don’t expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong."
On improving neighborhoods and crime, "I sometimes wish that people would put a little more emphasis upon the observance of the law than they do upon its enforcement."
On character, "Industry, thrift and self-control are not sought because they create wealth, but because they create character."
And finally on freedom, "We cannot continue to enjoy the result, if we neglect and abandon the cause."
So as you reflect on what our x-President said so many years ago, how do these words make you think?  Do any have an affect upon you?  What could we learn from history and improve our own lot in life?  Or maybe just ignore them like so many have done before and settle for the excuse that history just repeats itself?
